Title vs Money: An Update

In my earlier post, I explored which matters more, title or money? After years of experience and reflection, I’ve come to realize there’s a third factor that eclipses both: impact.

Why Impact Matters Most

Title and money are visible, measurable, and easy to compare. As a younger professional, it was the surface that mattered most. To me title got you money in the long run at least, but more importantly got you influence. Got you a seat at the table just because of what your business card and email signature said. As I have progress in my career, it has been impact that has stuck with me the most and what I search for when I am in the position to be looking for a new opportunity.

  • Impact creates meaning. When your work and relationships move the needle, solves real problems, or helps others grow, it brings a sense of purpose that neither a title nor a paycheck can match.
  • Impact is the engine for both title and money. The more value you create, the more likely you are to be recognized (title) and rewarded (money). Impact is the root; title and money are the fruit.
  • Impact is remembered. People remember what you did and how you did it, not what you were called or how much you made. Your legacy is defined by the change you drive.

How to Prioritize Impact

  1. Ask bigger questions. Instead of “What is my title?” or “How much am I paid?”, ask “What difference am I making?” or “What is the value of this work to the organization?”
  2. Seek roles where you can see and move the needle. Sometimes the most impactful work happens outside the spotlight or in roles that aren’t the highest paid. Look for opportunities to solve real problems.
  3. Measure your results. Track the outcomes of your work, not just the outputs. Did you help a team launch faster? Did you mentor someone who went on to lead?
  4. Share your story. When you talk about your career, highlight the impact you’ve had. This is what sets you apart in interviews, reviews, and networking.

The New Hierarchy

If I were asked today, “What matters most: title or money?” my answer would be clear:

Neither. Impact is what is important. Title and money follow.

Focus on making a difference and the rest will come.
